medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Wonderful! Very many thanks, Katherine! Miriam had pointed me in the
direction of the mystical marriage, and now you've explained to me, in my
ignorance, how this is one reflection of your name saint's preeminence.
So, as I now read in the GL's opening etymology, her aggregation of the
saintly virtues led to the devil's 'total ruin', *catha ruina*.
Also, since Mary stands as mystical godmother to the erudite Catherine, I
shall now look at 'Anne teaching the Virgin to read' images in a new light.
What is now needed, as others have suggested, is a proper trawl through the
county inventories of bell inscriptions.
I hope this has been of some little use to you. It certainly points up, yet
again, the usefulness of TASC as a research tool. But I would say that,
wouldn't I!
Best wishes
Graham
