medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
As an addendum, the medievals probably would have understood absolution as
the "loosing" and excommunication as the "binding" of Matthew 16:19.
Also, if I remember correctly, the keys are often understood to be gold and
*lead*, silver perhaps being used later for artistic or heraldic purposes
(although that is my own conjecture).
