medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Dear Lena,
I agree with you in the similarities, but I have checked my notes and this
was the "Irish" Bridget. Also the video was done by something like PBS or
A&E so we cant be sure of the authenticity. I wonder how many strong women
have tried to take the path and have been successful in their own domain but
unheard when moving out.
I am familiar with the works of Bridget of Sweden, Marie d'Oignies,
Hildegard of Bingen, Julian of Norwich, Marjorie Kempe ( who, in a
vision/dream, assisted in the birth of Jesus, wrapped him in swaddling
clothes, and made Mary a nice cuppa tea). The former women , I have studied
quite intensely. Other women visionaries, I have done an course in as "
Medieval women visionaries and holy women as authors".
I agree with you as I review my thoughts about Bridget of Sweden that there
is a parallel and many similarities in the two Bridget's. However, I
believe Bridget of Sweden was a more "political" Saint from the beginning,
commanding belief and a following of monks who wrote down her "conversations
with God". Did she not die at age 21???
I wonder if the women who lived in Europe had more proximity to other holy
men and women and therefore had more " believability" or as Hildegard had,
more access to a strong male monk to champion her cause, thereby more
acceptance from the " patriarchal establishment"
I was very interested to learn that women could preside and could administer
the host during the first 400 years or so of Christianity. I would like to
learn more about this.
My interest is the "illness" of holy women, that seemed to "trigger" their
visions and that people now are trying to write off as physical illness.
Example Some call Margery Kempe " mad woman of God" and one of the recent
theories is that she had Tourette's syndrome.
Hildegard was thought by some to have "scintillating migraines".
Another interest I have is fluids - of tears, blood, lactation - body fluids
and how they play a part in the holy experience.
However, these are two whole other topics...
regards
Carol
