Tom,
Your colleague might try consulting Henk van Os, Sienese
Altarpieces, 1215-1460: Form, Content, Function, 2 vols (Groningen,
1984-90). He is a careful scholar who would probably have
investigated such an inscription (if the painting is an altarpiece,
anyway).
