i believe that Alexandre Lenoir was instrumental in saving quite a few objets
d'art from St. Denis and elsewhere, collecting them, in 1796, at the convent
of the Petits-Augustins (now the Ecole des Beaux Arts), where he was putting
together a "musée des Monuments français," which apparently had considerable
institutional and intellectual influence over the next few decades. the
Britannica on line waxes lyrical:
"Here, by clever juxtaposition and subtle lighting, the Middle Ages seemed to
be endowed with an aura of magic. By suggesting a relationship between a
chivalric past and the actual forms of Gothic sculpture and architecture,
Lenoir coloured the imagination of a whole generation of Romantics."
i suppose that the monuments to H & A were part of this effort.
