medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

enter religious life without his wife's "placet".
i know nothing about Canon Law, but i *believe* that there is a charter of
Ebrard(?) of Le Puiset, Viscount of Chartres (and a family not particularly
"law abiding," viz-a-viz Bishop Ivo), from the 2nd half of the 11th c. which
mentions his wife giving her "consent" to his entering Marmoutier. (perhaps
from the _fonds_ of the MM priory of Nottonville now in the AD of the
Eure-et-Loire, in which case it might be published in the _Cartulaire de MM
pour le Dunoise_.)
just a guess, but i would think that such "consent" would have had juridical
implications for, among other things, the disposition of whatever property she
might have brought to the marriage.
the "retirement" of such local Dons [mid-level Mafia Chieftans] to monastic
life for purposes of Salvation was, apparently, a not uncommon occurance in
the period (Marmoutier was perhaps a favorite spa, and Cluny must have been
one as well), and must have entailed considerable preturbations of Power
Handling within the extended "Family," including the kinship group related by
marriage.
ought to be a study of the phenomenon, somewhere, i should think. surely Duby
speaks of it for the Maconais.
best from here,
christopher
