medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Peter Linehand and Francisco Hernandez edited a short, but fascinating,
document treating the history of Louis IX' canonization, a short memo
written by an Aragone Bishop named Gonzalo Perez which they call the
*consilium*. I know George knows about it because I know of it through one
of his articles. My problem is the use of the word ATHONOMASTICE, which
I'm at a loss to translate. I've already cornered my husband's classicist
colleagues (hoping for some enlightement from Hellensists) but to no
avail.
The sentance reads "Vir enim dicitur a virtute. Inter virtutes autem
morales virtus athonomastice dicitur fortitude cuius spiritus est
perseverantia..."
Any ideas?
The document is edited in Revue Mabillon, v. 66 1994, 83-105.
Any and all help will be appreciated.
