An article that lays out some of the pre-Francis instances (it misses a
few) and later 13th-14th century occurrences is Andre Vauchez's "Les
stigmates se saint Francois at leurs detracteurs dans les derniers siecles
du moyen age," _Melanges d'archaeologie d'histoire_, 1968, pp. 596-625.
It's translated as "The Stigmata of St. Francis and Its Medieval
Detractors," _Greyfriars Review_ 13 (1999) pp. 61-89.
