medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
hagiographers.edu:
Does anyone know of physical marks (including invisible
ones, such as the later Catherine of Siena) of stigmate,
loosely defined, before Francis of Assisi? Do any vitae
contain some sign of suffering or the Passion of Christ
which might, however indirectly, provide some literary
background for the later specifically stigmata of Francis
and the many saints with similar identifying signs?
And, after Francis, are there other stigmatists in the
century after him? More to the point, does the
hagiographer's interpretation of the significance differ
from that Francis' earliest biographers, including
Bonaventure? Are these later stigmatists also "second
Christs" or simply manifestation the conventional marks of
sanctity?
Thanks. I'd much appreciate any leads.
