given in numerous present-day Eastern Orthodox churches that use this hand
position in making the sign of the cross, especially in the case of the
priest blessing the congregation. Since most iconography I have seen
where this feature is present shows the person depicted with their hand
raised in blessing, I've found this explanation persuasive.
