Dear Amy,
ancient, ancient _mudra_ with, probably a reasonably vast literature on it in
hindu and buddhist circles.
for the comparatively recent xien usage --or, at least, the *exoteric* meaning
of its usage-- you might try this, which was recently posted by Kathleen
Wilson Ruffo of the Department of Fine Art, U. Toronto to the french history
list:
Francois Garnier, *Le langage de l'image au moyen age* (Paris,
1982) "qui analyse la signification des actions et gestes physicaux dans
l'art medieval sera peut-etre utile."
i've never seen the thing, myself, so caveat lector.
best,
christopher
