I haven't seen the image, but if the gesture you're describing is horizontal
rather than vertical (as I assume it is given Seidel mind-boggling
interpretation) it could be a sign of the devil, made during the period
either to ward off the devil, or to accuse someone of being one. I did some
work on this in my thesis if anyone's interested.
