medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

yes, not liturgy as such --none having survived apparently.
i suppose that i was more interested in her application of "memory."

successfully (IMHO)--
i agree that the historiographic deconstruction of "Gislebertus" and the
"memory" parts of the book were relatively more sucessful than, say, those
which dealt with "purely" historical questions (like the the historical
identity of "Gislebertus" or the institutional nature of the church of St.
Lazare), which were, to anyone who's ever actually used historical documents,
rather embarassingly incompetent (university of Chicago press seems to have
give up the quaint idea of outside readers).
i was just wondering if there was an opinion among *non* art historians (not
that yours is not valued, Leah)-- liturgists especially-- about her
application of non-traditional art historical methodologies to an essentially
art historical problem.
not so much "memory", i suppose (my own of her arguement growing dim), but the
idea of the church of St. Lazare and its shrine being a kind of replica the
saint's tomb in the Holy Land and a visit to the shrine therefore being a
stand-in for a visit to the "actual" tomb.
if correct, this constellation would surely have been reflected
--prominently-- in the liturgy; but the liturgy servicing the church having
been entirely lost, we are left with "just" the "art" to base our speculations
upon.
it's not that i find her arguements in this area, in the main, invalid or even
unreasonable (as i do with her examination of the purely historical material);
just that i know nothing whatever about such matters and wondered if the book
had received any notice at all in non art historical circles.
best from here,
christopher
