medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
A text from Augustine's City of God (20:9), which was widely cited in
the Middle Ages, reads:
"The souls of the pious dead are not separated from the Church, which
is indeed the kingdom of Christ at present. Otherwise, they would
not be remembered at the altar in the commemoration of the Body of
Christ . . ."
There's quite a bit of recent work on liturgy and memory. See, for example:
Otto Gerhard Oexle, "Memoria und Memorialuberlieferung im fruheren
Mittelalter." Fruhmittelalterliche Studien 10 (1976): 87-95.
Idem, "Der Gegenwart der Toten," in Herman Braet and Herman Verbke,
eds. Death in the Middle Ages, Mediaevalia Lovaniensia, Studia, vol.
9 (Louvain, 1983), pp. 19-77
Karl Schmid and Joachim Wollasch, Memoria: Der geschichtliche
Zeugniswert des liturgischen Gedenkens im Mittelalter, Munstersche
Mittelalter-Schriften, 48 (Munich, 1984)
Jean Charles Picard, Le Souvenir des eveques: sepultures, listes
episcopales, et culte des eveques en Italie du Nord des origines au
Xe siecle (Rome, 1988)
Patrick Geary, Living with the Dead in the Middle Ages (Ithaca, NY, 199 )
Hope this helps.
