medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
St. Thomas Aquinas wrote a commentary on the Ave Maria, which lacks the
final precatory. It did exist, as you suggest, prior to Trent, but I do
believe it was added or recommended "officially" at Trent.

Clear proof for it is contemporary with Trent, mid-15thc. However it has
been argued that some 13th-15th-century Carthusian manuscripts contain the
full formula. The article making this case was written for a Marian
conference in the early 1900s and is not well known; it was cited by Yves
Gourdel in an article he did on Carthusian Marian devotion in the 1950s. I
have not seen the manuscripts both authors refer to.
The second part appears in printed Carthusian breviaries of the 2nd third of
the 16thc. I can supply details later. I would be glad to hear from other
list members regarding other 16thc evidence for the formula, as I am
currently working ont he Carthusians and Mariand evotion, including the
development of the Rosary.
