medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Re: Bartholomew and hospitals (Sorry about the delay in replying)
Here comes a shameless plug for my chapter in George and Carolyn's new book:
George Ferzoco and Carolyn Muessig (eds), Monastic Education and Formation
(Continuum 2001, or is it 2000?): 'Ghostly Mentor, Teacher of Mysteries:
Guthlac, Bartholomew, and the Apostle's Cult in Early Medieval England'.
Pat's point about the flaying is well made, though this appears to be a
lateish addition to the Bartholomew legend. Even the deposition of
Bartholomew's relics in a church on the site of a temple of Aesculapius came
late in the cult's development. The 'hospital' connection is there at least
from the sixth century, when the legend has the Apostle interrupting and
then appropriating a healing shrine, said to be in India but, as I argue,
more convincingly to be associated with the Levant.
Best wishes
Graham
