How well is your service meeting the needs of its disabled users?
The enabling library
A one day workshop on 23 May, in London
Disabled people have as many and varied library needs as anyone else, but
because there are so many kinds of motor and sensory impairment, their
physical and intellectual access needs must be met in many different ways.
In all types of library there are excellent examples of services that meet
the needs of a particular group of disabled readers but there are relatively
few libraries that adequately and appropriately satisfy everyone who has a
physical disability.
Benefits from attending
This practical workshop will consider issues such as physical access for
wheelchair users, making information accessible to visually impaired people,
and meeting the needs of people with hearing impairment. There will be
opportunities to share experience, to look critically at what is already
being done in participants' own library services, and to think about ways of
improving services.
By the end of the event participants will have:
* identified the range of motor and sensory impairments
* examined the different needs of people with different disabilities
* explored best practice in service provision
Who will benefit from attending?
The workshop is designed for anyone planning services or purchasing
equipment, as well as for people delivering services to disabled users.
Workshop Leader: Dr. Gill Burrington OBE.
Gill has worked in public and academic libraries, in higher education and in
industry and was LA President in 1994. She chairs THE ADAPT (Access for
Disabled People in Arts Premises Today) Trust and is on the Council of the
National Library for the Blind.
