italian-studies: Scholarly discussions in any field of Italian studies
Does anyone have a suggestion on how I might find
information about commercial aspects of poetry
writing in the 17th and 18th centuries?
Specifically, the contracting of poetry (sonnets, for
example) on the part of nobility, and subsequent payment to
the poet in monetary currency (as opposed to favors,
privilege, material gifts).
A play I'm looking at features an 18th-c nobleman who
requests sonnets from a poet who appears to be bourgeois,
and then, when the poetry is delivered, conveniently
manages to not pay for it. The money owed is specified as a
certain number of "ducati."
If anyone has any leads on the consumer or business
aspects of poetry writing at this time -- the mechanics of
"ordering" poetry, methods and types of payment, etc., I'd
appreciate it greatly. Did this practice exist among the
Arcadian poets?
Thanks in advance,
