At the start of each 6 mth post I give to each of the 6 SHO's a textbook on
A&E, one on X ray interpretation and one on how to avoid the common mistakes
in A&E (all paperback). I put their names in the books and they are to be
used primarily at home. The books also have the departmental stamp on many
pages! Interestingly they have always returned them at the end of the post,
probably because I've stressed that they would have to pay for them if not
returned to me.
Of course the initial cost is expensive, but that's nothing compared to just
one litigation case. So it's money well spent! Of course "you can take the
horse to the river but you can't make it drink!".
For books in the department there is a notice on the wall as follows:
For him that stealeth a Book from here, let it change into a serpent in his
hand and Rend him.
Let him be struck with Palsy and all his Members blasted.
Let him languish in pain crying aloud for Mercy and let there be no surcease
to his Agony till he sinks in Dissolution.
Let Book worms gnaw his entrails in token of the Worm that dieth not, and
when he at last goeth to his final Punishment, let the flames of Hell
consume him forever and aye.
We don't seem to lose a lot of books. I wonder why?

How do you stop the books you provide for your SHO's being stolen ?
