medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Sorry, Rob! Like most things in life, my problem is not really as simple as
it seems. Paul's quite right to the extent that my initial aim was, and
continues to be, to sort out why I should have found so many uses of *Rosa
Mundi* as an epithet applied to St Katherine. (Are you out there, Katherine
Lewis?!! Do you have a take on this?)
Subsequently I realised that in my ignorance I had no idea why, when or in
what circumstances Mary was so addressed (other than in the other bell
inscriptions I cited), and, as I said off-line to Martin Howley, I was
worried I was barking up the wrong tree. I had always thought that *Rosa
Mundi* was applied to the BVM but could not point to an example or find the
epithet in any of the standard works of reference I consulted. So your
citation is a great help, and thank you. The earliest bell inscription which
appears to name Mary as *Rosa Mundi* is dated only to the fourteenth
century, and I have no means of knowing, therefore, if it pre-dates your
document.
Best wishes
Graham
