Cathedral priories originated in England during the 10th-century
monastic reform movement. I believe one of the first instances was
at Canterbury, after Dunstan had come from Glastonbury to become
archbishop. He turfed the canons and replaced them with monks. So
the monks, under a prior, functioned as the cathedral chapter.
Besides Canterbury, the other cathedral priories in England during
the Middle Ages were Bath, Coventry, Durham, Ely, Norwich, Rochester,
Winchester and Worcester. The monks certainly administered
the cathedral precinct, but what their relationship was to the
care of souls of the bishopric, I know not.
