The full list of English Monastic cathedrals is:
Canterbury, Winchester, Durham, Worcester, Bath, Rochester, Coventry, Norwich, Ely, Gloucester.
Chester and Peterborough were Abbeys that became cathedrals at the reformation.
The English Abbeys whose Abbacy still exists in titular form include:
Abingdon, Athelney, St Alban's*, Canterbury (St Augustine's), Shrewsbury, Westminster, Glastonbury, Battle, York (ST Mary's), St Edmondsbury*, Evesham, Dunfermline, Tewkesbury, Tavistock, Lindisfarne, Iona, Whitby & Sherbourne. (Those with a * became Anglican cathedrals in the past 150 years.
When the English and Welsh hierarchy was re-established in 1850, the bishop of Newport & Menevia (who was a Benedictine)was given Belmont Priory (now Abbey) as his cathedral with a monastic chapter; this continued until reorganisation of the hierarchy in 1920.

<< File: ATT00006.html >> Thanks for this information. It raises more questions. Are you saying the
monks supplemented the canons in terms of administration of the cathedral,
or kept to their cloisters? :)
