medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
John Bromyard in his Summa predicancium has an interesting comment on
the ubiquity of crosses (C.17.24):
Just as religious put this sign of the cross on their walls and gates
so that the house will be known to be ecclesiastical and crimes and
damages will not be inflicted on them; and just as this sign is
placed in a certain place, so that passers-by will not pollute the
place with urine; so this sign should be placed in our hearts ...
(more than you wanted to know, perhaps!)
