medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Dear All,
As I understand things from my own Jewish wedding:
1-You simply cannot have a wedding on the sabbath because of all the work
involved. Technically the Rabbi is working, not to mention the musicians,
cooks, travelling to the site, etc., all of which is forbidden by the Fourth
Commandment.
2-A day begins with the setting of the sun, as the Bible says after each "day
verse", "And it was evening and it was morning, one (two, three, etc.]
day(s).
3-Any legitimate activity is allowed after sunset on Saturday, because it is
no longer Saturday, but Sunday. It is common in Jewish communities to open
shops and cafes after sunset on Saturday (which is really Sunday). I don't
know about any waiting period, but every Orthodox family has a calendar which
specifies the very moment when the Sabbath begins with the woman of the house
lighting the Sabbath candels, and the singing of the evening song which ends
the Sabbath. It seems to me that this would make things pretty clear, but
there may be other rules.
I hope this is helpful.
yrs, tom ault
