medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Dear Fellow List-Members (and List Owners in particular)
My university provides e-Mail using Windows 2000 and a program called
Outlook which is part of Emperor Gates's monolithic domain, so I guess a lot
of us may be required to receive our mail in this way. Mail is displayed
within a relatively small window, so that only the beginning of each message
is shown and one must scroll down to see the rest. (The size of this window
is restricted even more by the new JASCMAIL convention of a heading which
identifies the list - a refinement with very little utility in my view.)
Consequently it is frustrating if replies to postings begin with snips, so
that members' contributions are hidden from view. Faced with umpteen
incoming e-Mails, the instinct is to delete. But deletion may well mean that
the recipient remains ignorant of some piece of information or opinion which
he or she might well have found useful.
So an appeal to everyone for an additional line in our code of courtesy.
Replies upfront, please, with snips beneath. In fact, now that original
messages are so often attached automatically, snips are frequently
unnecessary. (Which reminds me to make a second request: since text takes up
bandwidth, can we please delete unnecessary strings of previous related
messages.)
Best wishes
Graham
