medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Recording religious devotion in multi-confessional communities. A Call for
Papers. (Please cross-post this message.)
Work is underway on the Trans-national Database and Atlas of Saints' Cults
(TASC), constructing a parish-by-parish electronic inventory of religious
devotion across Europe and beyond, to be mapped using GIS (geographical
information systems). To be a valid reflection of the shared foundations
which underpin Europe's cultural diversity, TASC must comprehend, within its
integrated spreadsheet inventory, varying confessional traditions as found
separately and together in individual communities and regions at various
periods. Common standards of research and parity of coverage and
presentation must be the aim: but how best can this be achieved? This is a
principal theme of this year's TASC Colloquium, to be held at the Central
European University, Budapest, October 15-19, and papers are invited from
scholars of any discipline who have experience of recording
multi-confessional communities for research and/or mutual exploration,
historically or in contemporary societies, particularly in the fields of
comparative and regional studies.

medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Carvings/decorations on the outside walls of French
churches is quite common, even omitting the obvious
gargoyles. They are frequently whimsical, even quite
profane. The strange wings on your angel may indicate
that s/he is a seraph, whose wings are usually
multiple and quite fantastically rendered. Is there
any way you can send an image? (Not to the list as a
whole, as that is discouraged by the owners.)
