medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Hi
I thought someone might have some interesting ideas / information about
a carving on the outside wall of the church of Longborough in the North
Cotswolds. It looks to me like a crudely cut angel with wings folded
behind her. Locals insist it's an angel due to the rather fin-like
feet and legs. I haven't come across anything like this before (except
for the manticours). Was engraving the outside walls of medieval
churches a common practice? If so, what kinds of figures were carved?
Are there any other examples of crudely carved or sketched angels?
Hope you can help
