medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Possibly related to the Eighth Day trope, is a "Rota Mundi/Quator Temporum"
chart from Swaffham M8, f46v-47r (Dean & Chapter Library, Norwich Cathedral
[my thanks to Tom Mollard, sub-librarian, and his staff]), a Catholic
recusant ms. of the early 17th century. (I'm researching early-modern
millennialist "maps" or dispensational charts and their relationship to the
discourses of science.) This circle is divided into four quarters (Tempus
Deviationis, Tempus Revocationis, Tempus Peregrinationis, Tempus
Reconsiliationis). There are four concentric rings around the center circle.
It defines eight "Etates Mundi" in the gloss that follows the chart
(f47v-48r).
Can anyone help me recover the chart's pedigree? Are there iconographic
analogues?
