One of my first years who was a trained lawyer spent a long time explaining
to a seminar on the Acts of Union the difference between independence and
autonomy. We found him rather a pain - but it was certainly a useful
distinction. (The same point could doubtless be made about Edward I's own
oaths of fealty to the king of France?)
