medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
This is probably not a virgin saint but a representation of
the story told in Valerius Maximus 5. 4. ext. 1 of Pero
breastfeeding her father Cimon in prison (his language
implies that the scene was painted in antiquity). Hyginus,
_Fabulae_ 254 reports the same story more briefly with
different names (Xanthippe and Mycon). A few years ago
I saw a Baroque painting on the subject in an exhibition at
the Royal Academy, but I can't remember the
artist--possibly Poussin?
