medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
William of San Stefano (ca.1300) based his treatise 'Comment la sainte
maison
de l'Hospital de S.Johan de Jerusalem commenca' partly on William of Tyre's
account and partly on the Miracula of the Hospital. The foundation legend in
the Miracula is itself a rereading of some events in 2 Maccabees. The
Miracula
was edited by K.V. Sinclair, The Hospitallers' Riwle: Miracula et Regula
Hospitalis Sancti Johannis Jerosolimitani, ed. K.V. Sinclair, Anglo-Norman
Text
Society 42 (London, 1984).
See also K.V. Sinclair, 'The Anglo-Norman Miracles of the Foundation of the
Hospital of St John in Jerusalem,' Medium Aevum 55 (1986), 102-8. There is
also
a good discussion of the foundation in J.S. Riley-Smith, The Kinghts of St
John
in Jerusalem and Cyprus c.1050-1300.
I hope this helps
