Dear Colleagues
Christopher's remark
>as far as i know (not very far, obviously) *any*thing (within reason)
>could be used as an altar, providing it were properly consecrated/
dedicated,
in the context of the discussion about _portable_ altars, prompts me to ask
for information about the origins, use, and status of the (?reliquary)
containers known in Catalan lands and presumably elsewhere as 'capelletas'.
A picture of one, held by a late nineteenth-century/early twentieth-century
hermit, can be found at
http://www.le.ac.uk/elh/grj1/links6.html
and any leads/bibliographic references etc will be most welcome.
Best wishes
Graham

yes, there certainly were portable altars around --several very beautiful
examples have survived, and surely many hundreds more have not.
whether or not they might have been used in the places you mention would, i
suppose, depend upon the circumstances of the place. as far as i know (not
very far, obviously) *any*thing (within reason) could be used as an altar,
providing it were properly consecrated/dedicated, charged with Universal
Will
to Become (in the phrase of that noted Indiana theologian, Kurt Vonnegut) or
otherwise properly comissioned for the purpose.
best from here,
christopher
