yes, there certainly were portable altars around --several very beautiful
examples have survived, and surely many hundreds more have not.
whether or not they might have been used in the places you mention would, i
suppose, depend upon the circumstances of the place. as far as i know (not
very far, obviously) *any*thing (within reason) could be used as an altar,
providing it were properly consecrated/dedicated, charged with Universal Will
to Become (in the phrase of that noted Indiana theologian, Kurt Vonnegut) or
otherwise properly comissioned for the purpose.
