CFP: The Problem of Prophecy in Church History
American Society of Church History Winter Meeting
(meeting concurrently with American Historical Association)
3-6 January 2002
San Francisco, California
Ever since Paul identified prophecy as a gift of the Holy Spirit, Christian
institutions have been reconciling the potential for continuous revelation
with the need to establish a functional (if not final) religious system.
Throughout the history of Christianity, groups ranging from Montanists to
medieval visionaries to early Quakers to twentieth-century Pentecostals
have proclaimed a series of prophetic renaissances, often to the dismay of
their more institutionally-minded contemporaries.
This call seeks papers addressing the impact of specific instances of
post-Biblical prophecy on the Christianity (or Christianities) of that
place and time. Papers covering any period or location in the history of
Christianity will be considered. Offers to moderate or respond are also
welcome. One or more finalized sessions will be submitted for approval to
the ASCH Program Committee.
