Subject: Biblical Translation
I have a fairly simple question: could anyone please tell me what role,
exactly, Coverdale played in the translation of the Bible?
Welcome, Amy.
IIRC it is the Coverdale translation of the Psalms which comprised the
Psalter which was attached to the Book of Common Prayer.
This means that it was the Coverdale translation which was the text used for
all the great Anglican musical settings and is the one still used today by
die-hards like myself who have grave reservations linguistically,
spiritually, culturally and whathaveyouly about twentieth century Anglican
liturgical devisings.
NB There were several versions of the Book of Common Prayer between Edward
VI and Charles II but what reactionary C of E's usually mean by the term is
the one authorised in 1662 either with or without the modifications allowed
in 1928. This does not effect the text of the Psalms ...
