medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
I was just yesterday rereading a little known an obscurely published
article by my doctoral advisor, Geoffrey Koziol, where he places such sort
of gruesome punishments against the body within the context of a larger
discourse on "body" and "bodies" (with all the connotations of
"eucharist", "body of Christ" and "body politic" that such might
imply). The citation is:
Koziol, Geoffrey. "Imagined Enemies and the Later Medieval State: The
Failure of France under Philip the Fair." In Identities and National
Formation: Chinese and Western Experiences in the Modern World,
Taipei: Institute of Modern History, 1994. 407-33.
