Ian {et al.],
'Dr.Hume's Four Maps of Liverpool : Ecclesiastical, Historical, Municipal,
Moral & Social' (slip-case title) by Rev[eren]d A[braham] Hume DCL, were -
as a 'stand-alone' set - self-published in Liverpool in 1858. Each map has
an inset "showing the locality of pauperism cholera & violent deaths". They
were "First exhibited before the National Association for the Promotion of
Social Science October 13 1858" - according to a statement to be found at
the bottom of each map. As David Smith notes in his 'Victorian maps of the
British Isles' (London : Batsford, 1985), pp. 63 & 110, ISBN 0-7134-4178-X,
these can be considered as a precursor to those of Booth. I drew
attention, too, to these maps in one of my two reviews of the same book in
'The Geographical Journal' (London : RGS), July 1987, 153(2), 293-4. In
my review article of this book in 'IMCoS Journal' (London), Autumn 1986, 22
[i.e. 24], 31-4 - albeit on typometric maps - I did state an uncomfortable
fact (a la Brian Harley 'Euro-centrism') : not all cartographical
innovations originated in London!
