In fact there is some circumstantial evidence (that a colleague and I are working
on) that suggests that Booth in fact took this idea of urban socio-geographic
analysis from work done earlier by a Liverpool parson (Rev. Hume) in the 1860s.
Booth of course was part ofthe Unitarian family from Liverpool that helped
finance and organise the Liverpool - Manchester railway and the shipping line of
the family name.
