Subject: Maps of Egypt
I have been forwarded the following question from a
colleague who is collaborating with a colleague in France.
Can anybody help with sources of information about the
projection details mentioned here? Rolf Bohme's 'Inventory
of World Topographic Mapping' mentions that a polyconic
projection was used for a 1:500,000 map produced in 1924,
but I cannot find any other helpful information.
"My question relates to the GIS I'm currently building
with a team at URBAMA on the city (today district) of
Heliopolis. We have problems with the "georeferencing" (is
that correct ?) of maps, at the 1/1000, established in the
1930s by the Survey Department of Egypt. These are
apparently following a British system of projection and
coordinates for which we can't find, either in Egypt or in
France, enough data to reconstruct. Do you have any idea if
such kind of information can be find in the UK and where ?
Many thanks.
