Philadelphia Seminar on Christian Origins
an Interdisciplinary Humanities Seminar
in its thirty-eighth year under the auspices of
The University of Pennsylvania
Department of Religious Studies
201 Logan Hall, Philadelphia PA 19104
Current Topic:
"The Wild Wild West: Religious and Societal Transformations on
the North African Frontier"
Chairs: William Gruen and Shira Lander (University of Pennsylvania)
The Philadelphia Seminar on Christian Origins will meet Thursday, March 1,
7-9 p.m. in the second floor Lounge of Logan Hall at the University of
Pennsylvania. Our speaker will be Susan Stevens of Randolph-Macon Women's
College, who will discuss
"Ritual Transformations in Roman North Africa."
Stevens will focus on the context of her Bir Ftouha excavations in
Carthage. She will explore formal similarities between religious spaces of
different religious groups and their ritual objects. Stevens' research has
taken her to Carthage every summer since 1988 to excavate and work at the
National Museum. A past president of the Byzantine Studies Conference, she
spent last year in residence at the American Academy in Rome.
She has requested that we read the following articles to prepare for the
discussion:
1) Liliane Ennabli, _Carthage. Une Metropole Chretiennes du 4 a la fin
du 7 siecle Etudes d'Antiquites africaines_, CNRS 1997, "Les Monuments"
45-141
2) S. Stevens, A. V. Kalinowski, N. vanderLeest, "The Early Christian
pilgrimage complex at Bir Ftouha, Carthage:Interim Report," _Journal of
Roman Archaeology_ 11(1998) 371-83.
We will gather for supper at 6:10 pm in Houston Marketplace, the basement
of Houston Hall (next to Logan Hall). The Marketplace offers an
inexpensive a la carte variety cuisine buffet. For those who do not know
the location, we will be leaving from the Logan Lounge at 6:00 p.m.
