you might take a look at Peter Lasko's _Ars Sacra_ (in the Pelican
History of Art series, out in a new[?] edition).
also might be some background in the old reliable [Fernand] Cabrol & Henri[?]
Leclercq, _Dictionnaire d'archéologie chrétienne et de
liturgie_, 1907- ; though i'm not sure what article to look under:
"reliquaire"??
the DACL officially ends with things carolingian, but if you could actually
find the subject discussed in it, that discussion would be
thorough and founded on the sources. a bit dated, of course. but then, so
are we all.
