Subject: c10th and c11th shrines
Is the material available here at St Albans too late for you ?
We have the remains of 3 shrines - or rather 3 shrine pedestals.
(1) the 1302-1309 Shrine of Saint Alban, destroyed 1539-1542 and used as
infill for a wall, recovered and reconstructed in 1872, dismantled and
reassembled in 1992-3.
(2) the Shrine of Saint Amphibalus (Alban's mentor) constructed 1325-50,
destroyed 1539-42, recovered and reconstructed c. 1872.
(3) the *mensa* of the pre 1259 Shrine of St Alban (illustrated in Mathew
Paris) reused as slabs during 18th & 19th c, restored and reassembled to
provide The Altar of the Persecuted, 2000.
If you want to come here (assuming you are not already familiar with us)
e-mail me and I will try to put you in touch with the local experts.
