As a trained nuclear physicist and quantum chemist, I feel a little
"out of my depths" sending a message to this list. However, I am
interested in possible `plant soul' connotations to `Plant(agenet)
related (or influenced) surnames' and this seems to be a relevant
forum.
Thus, in the 13th century Warren Plant(a/e)genet context:-
Plant(a/e)genet - transubstantiated through the plant-horse genera
(the usual `sprig of broom' interpretation might
be thought to remain consistent given Aquinas's
view of plants as the `first principal of life'
and given the parasitic herb broomrape which
might be seen as a `transubstantiated species')
Plantebene - hallowed implantation of soul
Plantefolie - implant(er) of contrition of sin
Planterose - establisher of the rose as a symbol of the Virgin and Christ
(cf. the Pearl poet's poem `Cleanness' for example)
Pl(a/e)nt(e) - bearer of the virtues of nutritive generosity,
abundant growth, and fertile generation
(in 1219 the royal auxiliary Radulphus Plente
was a contemporary at Oxford of Robert Grosseteste who
amended Avicenna's `plant soul' with a `heart of
light' to explain its powers of the nutritive,
augmentative, and generative - see also definitions
in the Middle English Dictionary for plaunt and
its variant plente).
Some further detail is given on the web site:-

Expert comment would be appreciated.
