Myth and geography come together dramatically in Iceland.
I have a copy of the 1585 map of ISLANDIA by Abraham Ortel - Bishop
Gud-brandur Thorlaksson's map of Iceland - (dedicated to Frederick II King
of Denmark, Norway, the Slavs and the Goths) where a vigorous depiction of
Mount Hecla - the glacier-covered active volcano is captioned thus: (NB some
of it is hard to read even with a magnifying glass.)
HEKLA perpetuis /
damnata e(?)stib. et ni-/
uib horrendo boat(?)u /
lapides evomit.
