Although scarlet fever is not a
problem in NZ I was interested to see that a graph from the UK showing the
mortality from this disease. The graph revealed a similar downward curve to
the other childhood diseases - yet there is no vaccine for scarlet fever.

Scarlet fever is the result of an infection with a particular strain of
streptococcus, I believe. Although there is no vaccine for scarlet fever,
perhaps one reason for the decline might be the increased use of antibiotics
to treat streptococcal pharyngitis (as discussed a week or two earlier on the
list.)
