Animal bones and social stratification. A preliminary
analysis of the faunal remains from cess-pits in Amsterdam
(1600- 1850AD). Gerard F. IJzereef. 1988. Archaeozoologia
II/1,2 pp 283-292.
Abstract: Faunal material from excavations in Amsterdam was
studied in a preliminary way. More than 100,000 animal
remains were collected in cess-pits at the locations of
Waterlooplein and Oostenburgermiddenstraat, all dating from
the 17th and 18th century. The study focussed on the
differences between the cess-pits as a way of establishing
parameters or indications of social difference between
individual households. Very clear differences
were found for jewish and non-jewish households.
Furthermore, three groups were established, being the rich,
the avaerage and the porr people. Information of the
different faunal contents of the cess-pits from these three
groups is discussed here.
Suggest you contact IJzereef for later/more detailed
publications.
