I recently came across this quotation. It doesn't answer your question, but they
help to explain why no-one is sure about early domestication of goose and duck:
Darwin Animals and Plants under domestication
"although the domestication of the goose was ‘of very ancient date', ...
‘scarcely any other animal that has been tamed for so long a period, and bred so
largely in captivity, has varied so little'. I have also come across many
references in Britain to the fact that wild geese voluntary join domestic
flocks, eg in the Hebrides and Lincolnshire
