Dear all,
While we are on the subject, there is a good review on the physiology
underlying PET (and fMRI) signal by:
Jueptner, M. & Weiller, C.
Review: does measurement of regional cerebral blood flow reflect synaptic
activity? Implications for PET and fMRI
Neuroimage (1995) 2;2:148-156.
It concludes "...Monitoring of regional cerebral blood flow with PET or fMRI
thus mainly reflects neuronal and more specifically (pre-) synaptic
activity."
The point that excitation and inhibition both lead to increases in signal is
also well made; an area of potential confusion when people report
'deactivations'.
Cheers.
Alex.
