The Dissociation Model of Overconfidence
Wednesday, October 17th , 1-2pm
Room 4029, 4th floor, Main Building, Malet St.
All visitors are welcome
Abstract: Subjective confidence in the accuracy of knowledge retrieved
from memory is not a reliable predictor of the actual accuracy. It is
hypothesized that this overconfidence phenomenon reflects a dissociation
between cognitive processes underlying knowledge retrieval on the one
hand, and cognitive processes which are associated with the emergence of
feelings of confidence. Whereas retrieval accuracy is dependent on the
existence of the target knowledge in memory and on the efficiency of
memory search and retrieval processes, feelings of confidence are gradually
developed via anchoring and adjustment process. the initial feeling of
knowing is the anchor and peripheral cues like retrieval latency and mental
load serve as the adjustment cues. The dissociation model is tested in a
series of empirical studies and its theoretical implications are discusses.
