Next Wednesday 17th at 5pm, Nick Sevdalis will be discussing "Measurements Issues in Experienced Utility Research" at UCL (5pm, Room 313, Dept of Psychology on the corner of Bedford Way & Torrington Place). At lunchtime on the same day, another seminar of interest to jdm-ers is taking place at Birkbeck. Details are forwarded below: ---------------------------------------------------------- Cognitive Sciences Seminars School of Psychology Birkbeck College Dr. Dan Zakay (Tel-Aviv University, Israel) The Dissociation Model of Overconfidence Wednesday, October 17th , 1-2pm Room 4029, 4th floor, Main Building, Malet St. All visitors are welcome Abstract: Subjective confidence in the accuracy of knowledge retrieved from memory is not a reliable predictor of the actual accuracy. It is hypothesized that this overconfidence phenomenon reflects a dissociation between cognitive processes underlying knowledge retrieval on the one hand, and cognitive processes which are associated with the emergence of feelings of confidence. Whereas retrieval accuracy is dependent on the existence of the target knowledge in memory and on the efficiency of memory search and retrieval processes, feelings of confidence are gradually developed via anchoring and adjustment process. the initial feeling of knowing is the anchor and peripheral cues like retrieval latency and mental load serve as the adjustment cues. The dissociation model is tested in a series of empirical studies and its theoretical implications are discusses. --- End Forwarded Message --- Dr. David Hardman Department of Psychology London Guildhall University Calcutta House Old Castle Street London E1 7NT Phone: +44 020 73201256 Fax: +44 020 73201236 E-mail: [log in to unmask]
